Here’s something that Karl Rove said once, that perfectly sums up the difference between people like Schwartz and scientists. I think we can safely say that reality will reassert itself and intrude on their fantasy world eventually:

Journalists are “in what we call the reality-based community,” which he defined as people who “believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernible reality.” … “That’s not the way the world really works anymore,” he continued. “We’re an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you’re studying that reality—judiciously, as you will—we’ll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that’s how things will sort out. We’re history’s actors…and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do.”

I guess if we all think about this enough and get headaches then we will be asexual?

Seriously, Nickie’s point about the distinction between science and rhetoric (creating reality) is particularly concerning given the scientific illiteracy of the general population. If someone on the panel does not question the scientific validity of Schwartz’s claims, would the lay listener think to question Schwartz’s claims?

Thanks for making the scientific method interesting and important from a new perspective.
