I also wonder what this all will mean for front stage and back stage behavior. You might have heard of a recent film called “Surrogates” which is a futuristic film with robots going out into the world, rather than the people who control them. Conceptions of social and interaction may be shifting in a tectonic way…

great post, however, i disagree that the porn industry should be thought of as one that is pushing new technological breakthroughs given its current difficulties. the industry you describe that is pushing these new technologies is dying. it is being usurped by amateur porn and the trend of porn-producers engaging in social media rather than teledildonics.

the tautology produced here -that porn always has and always will be at the forefront on new technological innovation and adoption- might be a mistake. people also mistakenly thought malls would always increase in size and number. the massive trend towards the amateurization of porn speaks to the DE-technologizing of porn, not the opposite.

and, to anticipate a possible rebuttal to my point here, it is NOT the case that the porn industry’s recent adoption of social media illustrates the porn industry is pushing technology. social media tools were not invented or even quickly adopted by the porn industry. they were invented elsewhere and subsequently adopted by amateurs, and only much later by the industry.

but again, the central trend with respect to porn and technology is of DE- technologization, contrary to your argument here. however, i acknowledge your examples and it is clear that porn is relevant to technological innovation. last, what are the repercussions? might i recommend: “Love and Sex with Robots: The Evolution of Human-Robot Relationships” by David Levy. http://www.amazon.com/Love-Sex-Robots-Human-Robot-Relationships/dp/0061359750 ~nathan
